Arrested in Thorns

We walk on stilts

Above the malodorous muck

Whilst blackberry bushes

Climb the walls flowering

So bees can make the sweetest of honey

This tingle on my tongue

Tantalises with the taste of times past

Blackberries growing outside the school fence

Flourishing beyond the confines

Underneath the railway bridge

Out of bounds but forbidden fruit

Has always lured us humans into danger

Until the advent of spraying

Today the tentacles rise

Wrap around and draw down

Suffocate us with the stench of adulthood

The same as lurked under that railway bridge

Had we but known it then

Arrested in thorns
