Omens

two crows had been having quite a conversation

much to my mother’s consternation

for she believes in omens

I believe in cats

my neighbour’s black and white cat

sauntered across our driveway

stood staring meaningfully at out front door

in sudden silence

I had a one way chat through the door

the cat politely pretended to listen

before sauntering home again

I remain catless

perhaps tomorrow I’ll sit in the weeping gum

chat to the crows about the perfidy of cats

and the seriousness of collective nouns

and omens

As The Crow Flies East

as the crow flies east

Photo: As the crow flies east   by Daniella

My mind

Drifts on summer currents

Following the crow

As he flies east

Away from the desert heat

Towards the ocean

The crow soars

A tidal surge of black

Against the lowering

Grey filled sky

A raucous caw

As he escapes

The wandering eye

A flash

Invasion of his morn

Camera drawn

Lenore + The 7 Ravens or Lenore + The 7 Crows or Mr. Poe Turns in his Grave

Lenore relaxed on her back porch basking in the last rays of the sun as the afternoon began to wane. As she sat a solitary crow landed on the railing, looked her in the eye and spoke.

Caw caw caw

Nevermore nevermore nevermore

Shoo!! Shoo!!! She cried, flapping her hands ineffectively at the crow. The crow simply ruffled its feathers defiantly, repeated the call.

With an answering caw, two more crows landed on either side of the first. With a quick glance at each other they began in chorus.

Lenore tried to stand and force the crows off her railing but something in their beady little eyes made her hesitate and sit back.

Two more jet black crows landed and now the five chanted together,

Caw caw caw

Lenore Lenore Lenore

Nevermore nevermore nevermore

When two more arrived the magical number of seven crows sat in a row silently staring at Lenore. All she could do was stare back mesmerised. All at once they began to speak again.

The silence broken she swept up off the chair and rushed at the crows yelling out

“You’re not even ravens!!! You’re just common crows!!!!!  Leave!! Leave!! Leave!!!”

They left. She danced around her porch in glee, tripped up, fell down the stairs, hit her head.

The crows came back and sat upon the railing for one last gloating caw.
